From the very first moment that METAdrasi created the Transit Accommodation Facilities for Unaccompanied Minors, one of the main goals was to make children staying there feel like living in a home. A home in which everyone participates and freely express their opinion and in which decisions are made through a democratic process.
In this context, the weekly “Family Council” has been established, where all members, staff and children, discuss the function of the accommodation facility, their activities, the rights and obligations that every child has, the problems that they may be facing and other issues. Through dialogue and mutual understanding, everyone’s opinion is heard and respected. Issues related to individual hygiene and respect for each other are being developed, advice and guidance are given. In fact, at one of our family councils in Samos, the children themselves discussed and set new rules: they decided to respect the time of study, as well as the things and space of others; to not talk bad to their friends, especially if they don’t understand their language; to recognize and own up to their mistakes.
Of course, all the children in our accommodation facilities are very creative and many times they really impress us with their proposals. They are interested not only in the house, but also in the society they live in. Many times, the children themselves have proposed to help local community, collect the garbage, recycle, visit a nursing home. Such initiatives, in addition to giving us great joy, are an example to imitate for all of us!
