\u201c\u03a4he necessity of safeguarding quality interpretation within the framework of the refugee situation\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We are referring to the recent incident regarding the exploitation network that operated in Samos<\/span>,<\/span> issuing fake medical certificates to refugees and migrants and to which doctors, nurses and interpreters were involved. These interpreters were not members of <\/span>METAdrasi<\/span> and the incident confirms once again <\/span>the necessity of safeguarding quality interpretation and of the implementation of a specific code of conduct regarding the role of the interpreter within the framework of the refugee situation.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

METAdrasi\u2019s<\/span> team of interpreters covers, for nine years now, interpretation needs not only at Samos\u2019 hospital, but also in healthcare services on the islands that are subject to great pressure due to refugee flows, either on a volunteering\u00a0basis and on own resources, or with the support of the UNHCR. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cA reason why one of our first activities was the creation of a trustworthy interpretation system, was the fact that incidents<\/span>,<\/span> like the one in Samos, were the norm and not the exception and they would lead to the distortion of the asylum procedure itself\u201d, states Lora Pappa, <\/span>METAdrasi\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>p<\/span>resident.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The fact that within <\/span>METAdrasi\u2019s<\/span> nine years of provision of interpretation, none of the members of our <\/span>interpreters<\/span> team, which consists steadily of more than\u00a0of 350 members, has ever been exposed to such incidents, is not a coincidence. <\/span>METAdrasi<\/span> since 2010 has created a system of selection, multiday training, examination and certification, constant <\/span>assessment<\/span> and further\u00a0training,\u00a0interpreters\u2019 code of conduct and mainly a specific coordination and supervision mechanism for the interpreters in the field. It is a <\/span>unique holistic model of provision of interpretation,<\/span><\/b> not only on a national, but on a\u00a0European level as well. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
