The drawings in the online exhibition “Voices Through Art” were created by refugee children residing in the Pournara and Kofinou reception centers, students of METAdrasi Cyprus, in honor of World Refugee Day on June 20th.
We chose to give the children the freedom to express what they wanted — to send their own messages through their artwork. And there were many messages. Through their creations, the children seem to be telling us:
“We have gone through, and are still going through, situations no human being — let alone a child — should ever experience.”
“We need to ‘put down our roots,’ to find a place where we feel safe, a place we can call ‘our home”
“Above all, we are children who dream of rainbows, butterflies, school, and home…”
What Homeland?
I Belong!
A heartfelt thank you to the children who participated with eagerness and shared a part of their world.
A world marked by war and upheaval, but also one filled with hope. A world not defined by borders, but by flowers, suns, flags, cartoons, and home.
One single, unique home — a place where they can live in peace and build a life full of dreams.
I will always remember the faces of all the children while they were painting!
