Akelius: Learning Greek, Building Bridges

31.10.2025

I use Akelius with my students—most recently with a class of adult refugees. I find it particularly useful for students with learning difficulties, as well as for teaching foreign languages. With Akelius, students learn Greek gradually and interactively. I recommend it to every educator,” says a teacher from a primary school in Northern Greece.

Starting in 2021, METAdrasi, with the support of UNICEF Greece, has been bringing Akelius—a digital language learning course—to schools across Greece. Students with refugee and migrant backgrounds, Romanies, and others from all regions of the country now have the opportunity to learn Greek, English, and other subjects through Akelius’ interactive activities, images, and sounds.

Since the program began, it has supported:
✔️ More than 60 schools across mainland Greece and the islands
✔️ More than 5,000 students
✔️ Hundreds of teachers and Refugee Education Coordinators (RECs) through training on the Akelius Digital Language Learning Course

📌 In October 2025 alone, more than 300 teachers and principals participated in METAdrasi’s training seminars, while more than 100 Refugee Education Coordinators and Education Advisors took part—both online and in person—in seminars totaling 20 hours.

🎯 All of this is driven by one shared goal: to support the smooth integration of every student into school and the wider society.

The Akelius Digital Language Learning Course was developed in 2017 by the Akelius Foundation in collaboration with UNICEF to support language acquisition and social integration for refugee and migrant children.
