As part of the “Together in Sport” project, and on the occasion of World Refugee Day and Olympic Day 2022, METAdrasi in collaboration with the Hellenic Olympic Committee, held two sport events in Ioannina and Drama.
The first event entitled “Let’s work out in the park”, took place in Ioannina, in the gym park created by METAdrasi and delivered to the Municipality as part of the project. Experienced trainers, together with Olympic medalist Eirini Aindili (bronze medal in rhythmic gymnastics – Sydney 2000) showed a total of 116 children – Greek as well as children from the refugee camps – how to exercise on the park’s equipment. The children discovered the benefits of exercise and experienced outdoor sports. In addition, they were introduced to other sports such as wrestling and football at the various sports/gym stations.
In Drama, more than 200 children gathered in Eleftheria square, to enjoy the Open Street Handball event, organized in collaboration with the BIANCO MONTE DRAMA 1986 Sports Club and the Municipality of Drama. Our little friends, asylum-seeking children together with children from the local community, got to know the sport of handball through interactive games. Accuracy, learning to dribble and shoot, handball matches and much more, awaited them in the central square of the city, while the event was attended by the international handball player and member of the Greek national team, Petros Boukovinas.
The completion of these two events left only smiles for the children who enjoyed all the sport games they could get!
“Together in Sport”, initiated and co-funded by the German Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, is implemented by METAdrasi in cooperation with the Hellenic Olympic Committee, the German Olympic Sports Confederation and the participation of municipalities all over Greece. The project is co-funded by the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF).
