Despite the extremely difficult and many times inhumane living conditions in the camp of Samos, unaccompanied children together with METAdrasi’s team do not give up. Following the graffiti activity of painting containers where they live, the unaccompanied children of the Safe Area have now started a new activity: planting flowers.
A child from Iran, with experience in gardening, as soon as he saw the flowers brought by METAdrasi’s team, rolled up his sleeves and with great joy, started planting them in pots. His knowledge and skills motivated the rest of the children to participate with enthusiasm. In the end they proudly watered the flowers and admired their beauty. And now, all the children take care of the precious flowers, which are a source of joy not only for them, but also for the residents of the camp who, as they pass in front of the Safe Area where unaccompanied minors stay, stop to look at the flowers with a wide smile on their faces; a small touch of joy inside the sad camp with a population of more than 7,000 people.
Safe Areas are part of MERIMNA project of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), funded by the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund of the European Union (DG Home).
