Today, in Greek language class the adolescent students of METAdrasi’s Step2School educational programme came across the word sponge harvesting, as an example of declension of nouns. How could their teacher explain to them what sponge harvesting means? She chose to show them a photo with natural sponges, like the ones hanging in the shop windows on the Greek islands, full of souvenirs and local products. This photo evoked memories in the young students who began to talk about their adventures on the islands, an important stop in their long journey before arriving in Athens. They said that they saw the sponges in the shops but could not understand what they were. But now they know! And just like that, grammar meets life and language lessons are filled with emotion.

Step2School programme has been operating since the summer of 2020 with the support of the Liu Kuo-Chun Educational Foundation, Hong Kong.
